“The trouble with you bumiputra businessmen,” My Chinese
friends would tell me, “is that you hold grudges. And what’s
worse, you will go out of your way just to get even.”

And being a bumiputra, I hate it. I hate it because for the
most part, it is true.

So I try to justify it by quoting “an eye for an eye”.

My learned Chinese friends would smile thinly. “An eye for
an eye will end up with everybody being blind, Azizi.”

That cooled th e fire in my heart. But I would revert, “Well,
some people will always try to do you in. You can’t let them
walk all over you.”

“That’s true,” they would agree. “You must never let people
walk all over you. Once bitten, you must take steps to
prevent it from happening again. But that does not include
going out of your way to kill the snake. Killing the snake
will not take the poison out of your system.”

Another silence would follow.

But I was headstrong. “Hey, everything is fair in business,
you know.”

“Who told you that?” They would laugh. “I bet it’s probably
some failed businessmen.”

I had to admit that they are right - again.

Then they would go on. “There are a lot of rules in business
- a lot. And if you want to be successful in business, you’d
better follow the rules. If you want to be in busin ess for a
long time, you’d better follow the guidelines. And the first
rule is to be honest. Honor all agreements. Do what you say.
There’s no two ways about this.”

I’d nod my head.

And then the killer words streamed from the silence of the
night. “And what makes you think that being stabbed in the
back is reserved solely for bumiputras? What makes you think
that only bumiputras have rivals? Do you think that Lim Goh
Tong had everything going his way? Do you think that
everything was handed to Ananda on a silver platter? Don’t
you think that these folks have rivals too, just like you
and me?”

Well, what can I say? When the truth is staring you in the
face, you’d better accept realities. And the reality is
this: all businessmen have rivals. Regardless of race,
religion and beliefs. This has nothing to do with them
stepping on people’s t oes - it’s simply the way it is.

See folks, if you take over market share from a competitor,
you have by default become his adversary. Even if you did so
by providing better service, faster delivery and lower cost,
as far as he is concerned, you yanked his rice bowl away.
Rest assured that you would not be gracing his birthday
party anytime soon.

And actually, all successful people - those in business
and those not in it as well - have been stabbed in the back,
belittled, laughed at, mocked and discredited at some point
in their career.

Even Hollywood stars are not spared. See folks, the movie
stars that you and I idolize today were once just struggling
actors. To give just two examples - Dustin Hoffman and Gene
Hackman shared a small flat when they first started out.
They were at the bottom of their class, voted the least
likely to succeed and yes, laughed at. But the y got their
own back when they became stars. They got their revenge
when their rivals and critics bought tickets to see their
movies.

So folks, despite what you have been taught, the best
revenge is not served cold. The best revenge is not taking
an eye for an eye. The best revenge is living a happy
successful life.

Yes, take all steps to protect yourself, your family and
business. Yes, do what is necessary to protect what is yours
and not let people walk all over you. But waste not a minute
planning revenge.

And when you sit down and think about it, it makes sense.

See, every minute that we spend planning revenge equals one
less minute to enjoy life and make more money. Every effort
we take to get our own back takes away effort from
increasing our wealth. And how is that going to help us
become happier and richer?

So yes, I will do what is necessary to protect my fa mily,
my business and myself.

And no, I will not spend a minute planning my revenge.

The best revenge is living a happy and successful life.
